History of the WAVFH

In accordance with the XIth resolution of the XVth International Veterinary Congress, Stockholm 1953, passed on the proposal of section VIII (Food Hygiene and Public Health) "The International Association of Veterinary Food Hygienists" (I.A.V.F.H.) was founded in autumn of 1955.


The first symposium organised by this Association was held in Utrecht (The Netherlands) August 27th - September 1st 1956.
The symposium was attended by 172 veterinarians from 24 countries (see picture below).
It was decided that one of the future tasks of the Association consists of preparing and co-ordinating the programme of the Food Hygiene and Public Health Section at International Veterinary Congresses in addition to organising symposia from time to time on important aspects of the Veterinarian-Hygienist´s work.
